Nov/ Dec 2009 - Rooftop Renovation

Well earlier this year we decided we were going to renovate our bathrooms and then after some research, found that the prices quoted were much higher than we imagined. So we changed our plan to renovating the rooftop, as the reason we wanted to renovate the bathrooms was partly 'cosmetic'.

It was a long-winded process including going through designs, finding a landscape architect, uncovering plants and structural elements that could cope with the unique conditions of the roof - blazing sun without shade and some light winds as well as limitations from our Body Corporate about what was possible.

The big cleanup before work started

After presenting plans to the Body Corporate and getting mixed complaints (some changes made), then going through legal advice and then city council approvals process, we finally got started in early November in one of the earliest heatwaves for the summer with 7 days over 32 degrees in a row in Melbourne. (I felt terrible for the guys doing the core roofing job).

Stage 1 - ripping up the current floorboards, re-inforcing the structural boards underneath and putting in the new floor in Spotted Gum. It lo0ked 100% better than previously!

Below the surface

We had to wait another 3 weeks for Stage 2 - structural work including a steel fabricated pergola for dappled shade, custom made fibreglass planter inserts in the decking and doing some initial re-planting of our current plants in the inserts. Stage 2 was only completed at 4.30pm on Christmas Eve. . Mark was wonderful and did 3 hrs of planting in the rain (during a massive rainstorm as the tail end of Cyclone Laurence which dumped over 200mm of rain in 3 days in Northern WA) so we'd have a lovely Christmas day as we were hosting 25 family members.

Decking completed and now we're starting the pergola

Christmas Eve night after lots of rain

Planted and virtually complete for Stage 2
